de Supermarkt is a bright, light-filled shop on the Frederik Hendrikstraat in Amsterdam Centrum-West, mostly frequented by locals — and the occasional visitor who often becomes a regular. The name fits: the shop originally sat between two small local supermarkets. Its furniture is crafted from the 'devil's tree', an invasive East-African species brought over through a social programme supporting orphans. With the city centre expanding westward, the shop happily points people toward local sights — the Westerpark and Kaasfabriek, the Noordermarkt, and one of the oldest windmills in the world, all within walking distance. Inside, rotating local-artist exhibitions support the neighbourhood's creatives.
