What is the Jordaan?
The Jordaan was laid out in the early 17th century, when Amsterdam expanded beyond its medieval walls. It was built as a district for workers and craftspeople, which is why its streets are narrower and its houses smaller than on the grand canals next door. Today it is a quiet residential area of courtyards (hofjes), small galleries and brown cafés.
The canals around Siberië
The Brouwersgracht, where Siberië is located, takes its name from the breweries that once lined it. It meets the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, the three main canals of the 17th-century canal ring, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010.
What are the Nine Streets?
The Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes) are nine short side streets that cross the main canals between Raadhuisstraat and Leidsegracht. They are known for independent shops, vintage stores and small cafés. From Siberië it is about a 15-minute walk south along the canals.

Walking route
- Start at Brouwersgracht 11 and walk west along the Brouwersgracht.
- Turn left onto the Prinsengracht and pass the Noordermarkt and the Noorderkerk.
- Continue south along the Prinsengracht towards the Westerkerk tower.
- Turn into the Nine Streets and wander back north via the Herengracht.
